Before Owen Smith all dog racing was based on coursing where the dogs raced on a straight track and chased a real hare. It is more likely that he was motivated to create oval tracks around which greyhounds could race. He created his first one in California in 1919.

It was some years before this variation of the sport appeared in England. In 1926 the first greyhound racing course was opened and such was its popularity amongst the British working classes that by the end of the following year forty more of them had been opened.

Whilst horse racing was seen as a sport for the gentrified classes, greyhound racing was available to the working man who could attend races after work in the evenings, Betting on the sport was an extremely important aspect and even ownership of a greyhound became a possible aspiration for an individual or a small consortium.
